Icelandic MP .@birgittaJ on Bradley #Manning: Whistle-blowing shouldn’t be a crime #Viewpoint
Icelandic Member of Parliament Birgitta Jonsdottir talks with Current TV’s John Fugelsang about why she supports Pfc. Bradley Manning, who faces life in prison for leaking hundreds of documents to WikiLeaks.
Jonsdottir helped WikiLeaks publish “Collateral Murder,” a video leaked by Manning in which an American helicopter is seen firing on a group of men in Baghdad — two of the men who were killed turned out to be Reuters journalists. The U.S. Department of Justice eventually subpoenaed Twitter for Jonsdottir’s information, including her personal messages.
“Blowing the whistle on war crime should not be classified as a crime,” Jonsdottir says. Of Manning, she adds: “I think he has paid enough penalty already. He’s been in prison for 1,000 days. I haven’t seen any casualties for what he did. The people that … are responsible for the war crimes … in the ‘Collateral Murder’ — none of them have been held accountable, for example.”
